Your Future Self Is Counting on You

Small Decisions That Create a Life You'll Love

By Mary R. Dittman, M.B.A.

Many single women spend years waiting for life to begin.

We'll get organized when we buy a house.

We'll save more money when we're married.

We'll finally take better care of ourselves once life settles down.

We'll travel, decorate, declutter, and pursue our goals after we meet Mr. Right.

But what if Mr. Right never shows up?

Or what if he doesn't show up for another ten years?

Do you really want to spend the next decade living in limbo?

I don't.

One of the biggest shifts I've made in my own life is realizing that my future self is counting on me.

The woman I hope to be five years from now depends on the choices I make today.

And honestly, so does the woman I hope to be five months from now.

Take Care of Your Environment

Whether you rent a tiny apartment or own a sprawling house, your environment matters.

Is your home clean?

Organized?

Peaceful?

Does it support the life you're trying to build?

For years, I told myself I would finally get organized when I moved into a bigger place.

But clutter doesn't disappear when you move.

It simply comes with you.

Creating a peaceful environment isn't about impressing anyone else.

It's about making your own life easier and more enjoyable.

The same is true for your car.

You don't need a luxury vehicle.

But taking care of the one you have demonstrates responsibility and self-respect.

Get Honest About Your Finances

Financial peace may not be exciting, but it's incredibly freeing.

Do you know how much debt you have?

Do you have a plan to pay it off?

Are you saving for retirement?

Do you live within your means?

You don't have to be wealthy.

You don't have to have everything figured out.

But having a plan reduces stress and increases confidence.

And confidence feels good whether you're single, dating, or married.

Invest in Your Health

Your body is carrying you through this life.

How are you treating it?

Are you sleeping enough?

Managing stress?

Moving your body regularly?

Eating foods that help you feel your best?

As I've gotten older, I've realized that taking care of my health isn't about trying to look twenty-five again.

It's about preserving energy, strength, and vitality so I can enjoy my life.

I want to feel good.

And feeling good helps me show up better in every area of life.

Build a Life You Enjoy

For years, I thought getting my life together was something I should do so I would be more attractive to a man.

Today, I see it differently.

I want a peaceful home because I live there.

I want financial stability because I benefit from it.

I want good health because I enjoy feeling strong and capable.

And if a wonderful man eventually joins my life?

Great.

But I don't want him to rescue me.

I want him to share in a life I've already worked hard to create.

A One-Derful Life

Part of living a One-Derful Life is realizing that no one is coming to save you.

And that's actually good news.

Because it means you don't have to wait.

You can declutter today.

Save money today.

Take a walk today.

Schedule the doctor's appointment today.

Cook a healthy meal today.

Read a book today.

Do one small thing that your future self will thank you for.

Because she's counting on you.

And I think she's going to be really glad you showed up.
